Licensing

Public-facing overview of potential licensing, option, adaptation, publishing, merchandising, and production pathways.

Option Path

Short-term controlled rights for producer or studio development.

Shopping Agreement

Representative or producer shops the property while ownership remains controlled.

Licensing Scope

Rights should be defined by medium, geography, duration, exclusivity, and compensation.

Rights are licensed as defined components

“All rights” is not a useful business description. Every proposal should identify the property, media, format, language, territory, exclusivity, duration, permitted development, approvals, credits, compensation, accounting, sublicensing, and reversion conditions.

Rights family Possible scope Key control questions
Publishing Print, e-book, serialization, large print, book club Language, territory, term, publication duty, royalty basis, out-of-print and reversion.
Audio & translation Audiobook, dramatized audio, foreign-language editions Direct grant or agented sublicense, narrator/translation quality, accounting, and unsold territories.
Film & television Feature, series, limited series, animation, remake, sequel Option length, extensions, purchase price, reserved rights, credit, consultation, and turnaround.
Interactive & derivative Games, comics, podcasts, immersive media, merchandise Canon use, character and title rights, approval, quality, brand boundaries, and cross-collateralization.

Deal structures

Option

Temporary exclusive right to evaluate and develop a possible screen acquisition under defined payment, term, extension, and purchase terms.

Shopping agreement

Limited authority for a producer or representative to present a property to specified buyers without transferring ownership.

License

Permission to use defined rights for a particular medium, product, market, and term while ownership remains with the rightsholder.

Assignment or acquisition

Transfer of specified ownership interests. Because recovery can be difficult, the exact scope and retained rights require heightened review.

Co-development

Jointly defined development effort with written decision rights, contributions, ownership, cost allocation, exit terms, and downstream revenue.

Publication grant

Exclusive publishing rights limited by format, language, territory, term, performance obligations, and contractual reversion.

No implied availability: a property’s appearance on this site does not mean every right is available, unencumbered, or offered for license.

Licensing inquiry

Specify the property, requested rights, media, territory, term, and company.
